Adopt-A-Clean-Up
I’m sure we are all in agreement that Earth Day is now every day. Officially however, it is held in April. The date is approaching and the Simple Green Team is gearing up for our Adopt-A-Clean-Up. This year we decided to do something a bit different, we nominated four organizations that are doing their part for the environment, and in the sprit of community, we opened voting to the public from February 15-March 7, 2008. Thanks to over 2700 participates that cast their vote, we now have a winner.
And the envelope please… We are thrilled to announce the Pacific Marine Mammal Center as the winning organization that will receive a $5000 grant and become Simple Green’s Adopt-A-Clean-Up for Earth Day 08.
What’s next? Take a look at how the Pacific Marine Mammal Center will be utilizing their Adopt-A-Clean-Up grant.
“Funds received will support our efforts in public outreach events so that our message of marine habitat conservation reaches a greater, more widespread audience.” Melissa L. Sciacca, Pacific Marine Mammal Center
1 Earth Day April 19, 2008: Pacific Marine Mammal Center will be exhibiting an educational booth at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, CA from 10am-3pm in an effort to reach out and educate visitors on the marine environment and effects of pollution on marine mammals. This event has been occurring for over 6 years, and promises to draw a crowd of over 1,000 individuals.
2 Pacific Marine Mammal Center will be again exhibiting the following day, April 20, 2008 at the 18th Annual Upper Newport Bay Earth Day celebration from 10am-4pm. This event attracts 1,500-2,000 visitors each year, and is additionally supported by County, City and State environmental organizations. This is yet another opportunity to reach out and educate visitors on the marine environment and effects of pollution on marine mammals.
3 The remaining grant funds will go towards the “Pinniped Pollution” project; an educational program that teaches Title 1 students about how trash in their community makes its way to the ocean, and can adversely affect the animals that inhabit that environment. This pilot program will reach over 500 students, and highlights how simple trash clean-up can bring about positive change in the state of our oceans.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for allowing us to participate in such a unique opportunity, and look forward to a long standing partnership with Simple Green and its employees.” Melissa L. Sciacca, Director of Development/Marketing Pacific Marine Mammal Center
